8. The Spa well.

The spa well which gives its name to Spa townland is well concealed in a damp shrubby field, on private lands. It was heavily overgrown, but clearance shows it to be stone-lined and probably quite deep. From it issues orange-coloured water (full of iron oxides, hence its being called a "chalybeate" well), of a revolting odour, and gases containing hydrogen sulphide were released when I started clearing the vegetation. Clearly of great medicinal value- most spa waters are unpleasant to taste and smell...
