7. Boherboy, the old road.

Near point 7 the track of the old road bears off to the left, its position barely discernible in a wet rather rushy meadow. The road's alignment is clearly marked on the first edition Ordnance Survey map, but it's now almost impossible to locate up the hill. Walkers should not attempt to follow the road which runs on private lands.

This original road was replaced by a straighter alignment on which the original mail coaches ran. The newer road was in turn replaced when the "New Bridge" over the Boyle River (near the Abbey) was built in 1817 as part of a National scheme for mail coach roads. This new road served as the main road to Sligo until it was, thankfully, replaced by the Curlews bypass, finally completely open in 1999.

The fields hereabouts are, in summer, full of plants typical of damp meadowland, including ragged robin (Lychnis flos-cuculi)
