4. Church of Ireland. The principal part of the building would appear to have been completed in 1773. The church was enlarged in 1818 to accommodate the large number of soldiers who paraded from the military barracks each Sunday, led by the military band. Substantial restoration works were undertaken in the mid 1980's. The grounds are currently (1999) being cleared, allowing access to many interesting memorials.The beautifully constructed stone walls in the vicinity of the church play host to many interesting plants, particularly ferns. Near the tops of the walls are the common Polypody, while in the crevices further down are Wall-rue, Spleenwort and Rustyback, the latter being a lime lover indicating the calcareous nature of the mortar in the wall. |
