A family search

I have an ancestor Mary McDermott who, according to a story my grandmother used to tell, came to NY from Ireland alone around 1840 at about the age of 16. She was born around 1824. Her fathers name was James - listed on her death certificate as Jas. The story continues to tell how she worked caring for the children of a wealthy couple until she met and married my ggg grandfather Silas Woodland who had come over from Scotland. They bought and settled on some land in Lockport, NY and later moved to Ingham Twp, Ingham Co. Mich. I don't know where in Ireland she came from or any other info about her, but continue banging my head against this brickwall :)

New York/Ontario McDermotts

I am not giving up yet! I am still looking for McDermotts in either the Lewiston area of New York or in Ontario whose ggrandparents came to Ontario in the 1840s,50s,60s via New York and from somewhere in Ireland.

My gggrandfather Andrew Lawrence McDermott was allegedly born in Lewiston NY in December 1838 and died in December 1875 in Port Hope Ontario. (These dates are on his gravestone - so I assume my gggramma knew something about him). By then he had fathered Josephine, another girl and my ggrandfather Archibald Charles Henry or Artie. My gggrandmother was Susannah McCormick, born in the USA of parents from Fermanagh. Andrew died young, on a train, and may have been a conductor.

I know that there was a New York connection because all the wood and supplies for the house came by barge from New York from a relative's lumber yard.

Does this ring a bell with anyone ? Your critical analysis welcome. I don't know Andrew's parents names, and have checked church records etc in Ontario but have no baptisms before my ggrandfathers to find anything else out. Help !

Dr. Charles Henry M(a)cDermot(t)

Just posting a quick update to my previous information. The Dr. Charles McDERMOT of the West Feliciana Parish of Louisiana is not my Dr. Charles Henry McDERMOT of Jamaica, BWI. The one from Louisiana married a Hettie SMITH, daughter of Ozane SMITH, also of WFP, Louisiana. My Dr. Charles m. Elizabeth SNAITH in Jamaica. Looks like I head back to Jamaica (figuratively) for further research...
Thank you to all the listers who so generously shared your time and information. They provided the guidance I needed to follow this lead.

Unfortunately, I don't have any certificates from the MacDermottroe side of the family in Ireland.
I've been waiting for Census information to be put online so I can locate them. I haven't sent any requests
for certificates because I'm not sure if they were from Sligo or Roscommon counties. I do have an initial
search request that I sent to the County Sligo Historical Society (Aras Redden) a few months ago. I was hoping he would be
able to pinpoint their townland. It's possible they were in the parish of Kilmactranny based on another relative's recollections.

To further complicate things my grandfather, Michael Joseph, also married a Breheny (Kate, b. 1887) in the U.S. I do have her birth
certificate from Ireland. Her family lived in Moytirra and later Highwood. However, I don't think they knew each other in
Ireland and my mother says they were from different townlands. Kate's mother and father were John and Bridget Breheny.

This genealogy stuff is kind of like reinventing the wheel!
I'll let you know if I get any more info.
Thanks, Steve.

Dear Steve
May of the names of your ancestors appear in
my grandfather Thomas |Mc Dermottroe's
family line. It would help if I had a townland for your ancestors
Do you have place of birth for your grandfather in Ireland in 1878
all births deaths and marriages were registered after 1-1-1864
You should have no problem finding them as the children
were all born after this date in Ireland. Check with County Roscommon Registrar
There was a Breheny(your great grandmother's name) and a Mac Dermottroe drowned
in Lough Key in the early 1800 according to
a local song I heard in Roscommon. I would also check marriage registrar in
Boyle for Brehony, Mac Dermottroe marriage around 1876-78 before your grandfather was born
. They will search 5 year around a date for fixed fee'
The Registrar General
Joyce House

Lombard Street East
DUBLIN performs the same function

mac dermottroes

I would be interested in any info you have on McDermottroe's.
My great grandfather was James McDermottroe married to
Margaret Breheny (b. 1852 - d. 12/27/1928 in US). They
had six children: Michael Joseph (b. 1878) (my grandfather)
Mary Kate (b. 1881)
James J. (b. 1883)
Patrick (b. 1884)
John Matthew (b. 1888)
Madeline (Delia) (b. 1889)

James (the elder) apparantly died in Ireland and Margaret
immigrated to the U.S. in 1896 with the six children.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Steve.

We need your photographs in order to enable us to select the

We would also like to ask you to put pen to paper and either
compose a piece about a particular event or write your own

whatever you feel appropriate.

Let us have your copy by 15th November.

Jamaican McDermotts

Dear Conor,
I just discovered this page about a week ago and posted my query to it. At this point, I do not know who the parents of my Dr. Charles Henry M(a)cDermot(t) were nor do I know of any siblings. Ms. Maureen Humphries has provided me with a clue that I am trying to follow up on: He may be the son of Patrick (son of Guilaume from County Down, Ireland) and brother of Capt. Edward O. from the West Feliciana Parish of Louisiana and Chicot County, Arkansas. That Charles married Hettie SMAITH - close enough to SNAITH to warrant further investigation. So far, in Jamaica, I haven't found any mention of ROE being connected to this Dr. Charles. Does Guilaume of County Down fit into the ROE line?

Marie

Is your Dr Charles McDermott the Charles ("a young man" in 1807) son of Charles whose brother was Francis, and younger half-brother Peter.?
He can't be the Dr. Charles MacDermot Roe, son of Dr. Matthew, as the dates are wrong. Perhaps a son or grandson?
You dont mention whether you've seen the relevant passages in my father's book, MacDermot of Moylurg (see pages 339 - 346)

Arkansas Territory McDermott.

While researching some of the towns in America that were know as McDermott/Dermot I came across information on a Charles McDermott born April 4, 1808 in West Felician Parish, Louisiana. Parents were Patrick McDermott (born Ireland and landed in Philadelphia)and wife Emily Ozan. I would be happy to send the family information on to a relative if you would e-mail direct. The entire story will be in our MacDermot Clan Journal soon.

Second try WWII vets USA

Go to www.wwiimemorial.com to learn about memorial to be built in D.C. starting Veterans Day 2000. There is a Book of Rememberance being compiled. Let's be sure the McDermott clan is well represented. You can make a donation - or not - depending on your circumstances but book is open now so hurry on over and get the info from your WWII vet relatives. They want name, branch of service if possible and a brief desription of the vet's wartime activity.
Best wishes, Lawlor born then Moore married, ANN

Many thanks to all the McDermotts who attended the Clan Gathering 1999, it was a pleasure to meet you all and we thoroughly enjoyed the friendship and comradeship that exuded from everyone. We certainly look forward to seeing you again at the next clan meeting or even perhaps in the USA/Canada or even down under.
