Still Looking for Owen McDermott

Does anyone out there have an Owen McDermott in their research? I am looking for a father and son who share the given name Owen. They left Ireland after 1842(the younger Owen's birth year) and arrived here in Western PA. before 1870. I have no idea as to their point of departure or point of entry. I know that doesn't help much but that's all I can find. If you have an Owen that came into the USA and didn't stay long in the east, well, it's a possibility.

John

1900 PA McDermott family.

I have 2 missing brothers on the following McDermott family:
James Edward McDermott born Oct. 1881 and his brother Thomas F. born March 1888. Parent was Thomas McDermott(widow)born 1855. Another child in this family was daughter Grace born Feb. 1894. My line is from the brother, Carl Henry McDermott born Oct.1891 in PA.
If you have the 'brothers' of Carl's please contact me, as I have the 'Irish side' from 1847 back. Finding the line of my Great Aunt Grace would be a plus. All were on the Fed. Census of 1900 in Clinton Co., Lock Haven, PA.

John J. McDermott from NYC

Saw your message about your Grandfather's on both sides and Uncles. Would any of these Johns have married a Hepburn or Dunn? Would any have been a judge in NYC in the late 1800 to early 1900's? Pat

McDermott-Uncle Sam's reunions

Dear Jean,
I am positive we are closely related. I don't have my whole
family list with me at work but I do have your father's name
on my list as a child of Michael McDermott. Your father was
the 7th child of Florence Mary Knappand Michael and
Michael's 10th child [first wife Anna Marble]. My husband
is George, son of Fred Knapp McDermott [9th child of
Florence]. I don't have much more info than you have stated.
Roger McDermott Briggs [son of Olive] gave me a picture of
Michael McDermott and thought that Michael had a sister in
PA named Olive. Roger also thought his father might know
more but I haven't received more info.
I live in DC and have checked some of the census records for
PA and have checked the Civil War records but to date, I
haven't found him listed.

There is another family member who was working on the line,
a child through Anna Marble but I haven't heard from him
in some time.
I am positive we have met at Uncle Sam's during one of the
reunions. Your mother, if I remember correctly, came in a
recreation vehicle and was ill with cancer.
I know this is long but I have looked for so long for a
new lead. Perhaps together we can find one.
In addition to Michael's picture, I have many others of
the children of Michael and some notes from Tracey McDermott
son of Tracey McDermott.
I also have lots of notes on the Knapps if you are interested.
If you would like to share notes, I am at

Michael MacDermot

Good Afternoon;
I am searching for my McDermott ancestors as well. I have a gggrandfather named William MacDermott. His oldest son was named Michael. I have been led to believe that Michael could be the name of William's father because of the order of naming children. My Willima came to the USA about 1844-45 and we are not able to trace his parents. Could your Michael M'c Dernot be a connection for me???? Donald McLean

"McDermott" from 'down-under' (New Zealand)

I am so very interested in hearing from anyone regarding 'our family'. Also must add, I am glueless as to any names past that of my GrandMother, who was Annie McDermott. Having also just begun my search, I do know that the McDermott's were one of the first "Familys" to immigrate to the new colony New Zealand some 100 years ago. Even a 'tit-bit' would be greatly appreciated, "ThankYou"

Kathleen McDermott.

Michael McDermott (MacDermott,M'cDermott, MacDermot)

I had always assumed that I had the correct spelling for my
McDermott ancestors. I was at my mothers house and she
pulled out her information on our McDermotts. My great-aunt
had years before at the Library of Congress Copied a history
of the McDermotts. At the bottom of this history is the
following written by her (Marie Mcdermott Babcock).

"I can remember that papa always wrote his name M'cDermott.
I always believed that grandpa used the a in Mac and after
awhile it was dropped but the ' was used between the M and
c."

this maybe why I have never been able to trace my family
back further than Michael McDermott. Michael was my g-g-
grandfather and is the grandpa referred to in the above
quote. Michael married Margaret McLaughlin (McGlaughlin)
in Strokestown December 28, 1843. Michael and Margaret are
believed to be from Lissonuffy near Strokestown, Co.
Roscommon. Can anyone make a connection to Michael or
Margaret using these new spellings MacDermott,M'cDermott,
MacDermot?

Search for great grandparents

I have been searching for information about James P.
McDermott, who married Mary Ann Moran and had four children,
Frances, Helen, Anna, and Elmer. The latter two were
baptized in 1884 and 1888 in Pittston, PA. The 1920 census
indicates that Elmer's parents were born in PA. However,
there is no other information in any official records about
James or Mary Ann McDermott. If anyone knows of any
information about these people, we would greatly apprciate
help with this.

Lookalikes/Grosse Isle, Quebec

Ann, I agree that there should be some pictures. I saw a picture of Dermot MacDermot
in the wonderful tome "MacDermot of Moylurg", who looks a lot like my now
deceased great-uncle Bernard Michael McDermott or "Uncle Bert" who
lived in England and died in 1979.

Re Grosse Isle: Following is a list of McDermotts who died at sea or in
quarantine:
Ann aged 10 on the ship Naomi which embarked on 06/15 of 1847
Ellen aged 1 on the ship Sir Rob. Peel, 07/26 of 1847
Hannah aged 2 on the ship Naomi as above
James aged 26 on the ship Larch from Sligo, 07/11/1847
John aged 1 on the Tamarac from LPool, 05/26/1847
Mary aged 37 on the Naomi as above
Patrick aged 21 on the Lotus, 04/15/1847
Peter, aged 35, on the Larch as above
Thomas, aged 43, on the Naomi

Here are some who died on Grosse Isle and are buried there:
Catherine on the Ganges, aged 35, August 15, 1847
Ellen on the Naomi, aged 7, August 8, 1847
Honora, on the Free Trader, aged 70, August 15, 1847
Michael, on the Naomi, age 16, Sept.5, 1847
Timothy,on the Eliza, age 4, June 20, 1847

The 1850 Census

Use the 1850 fed. census in both Ohio and PA to see if a Patrick and Sarah or a Martin and Bridget McDermott has a baby on the census records named Michael. Also, check for a 1855 State of Ohio and/or PA State Census roll for the 2 families looking for the child Micheal, age 4 in a group. You are so close to making the jump to Irish records and really do need this information. Good luck.

Research on Michael McDermott

I am tryng to research my family line and have had very little success. If anyone could help me I would be greatful.
My grandfather is George McDermott born 27 April 1907 in Windburn, PA died 25 Dec. 1966 in Youngstown Oh. His father was Michael C. McDermott who was born around 1851 in either Pa or NY he died on 19 July 1913 in Blossburg, Pa and is buried in Arbon Cemetary Pa.
Michael was married twice first to Anna Marble who died 27 Sept 1896 and then to Florence Mary Knapp. He had a total of 12 children.
I have mixed information regarding his parents, His marriage license to Knapp lists parents as Patrick and Sarah McDermott but his death record lists Bridget O'Connor and Martin McDermott. The 1900 Census shows his parents as being born in Ireland and the 1910 shows they were born in Pa. Can anyone help? Please e-mail at jbsmrs@aol.com

McDermott. The 1850 census said he was from Co.Donegal.
He died in Saint John in1863 at the age of 65, so he must
have been born in 1798.
If any one has any connection to Alexander please contact me.

Pictures

Hello Webmaster,
Have you thought about having a place for pictures of McDermotts with note of the name and state and/or country of residence? On a visit to Ireland I went around a corner in Birr and literally bumped into a woman. We grabbed each others' arms and simultaneously began apologies. It was a good thing she was holding on to me...I nearly fainted. The lady was a dead ringer for my aunt Tess McDermott who had died several years earlier. And the lady's name was McDermott.
It would be nice to see how alike and how different we are.
All the best
Ann

Have not received email since 6/15/99

It seems strange that no messages have come in, especially since the reunion is so close. Am I the only one who hasn't received a message since 6/15/99? Or is it just that slow for messages this time of the year?

Let me know if I have missed messages. Also, my wife, Christine and I, have opened our McDermott's Dream Celtic Gift Shoppe in Green Bay, WI. If you're ever in the area make sure you stop in!!

Slainte, Bob"MAC"McDermott
