Ordered copy of above about a year ago. It's good
reading and an excellent reference point. I received the
first copy to arrive in San Francisco. All of my McDermott
relatives (150-200 yrs.) lived in Leitrim and Sligo.
May I propose a salute to the deceased author in
honor of his dedicated work
-----------------------------------------
Due to the generosity of the MacDermot family I now have a
copy of this wonderful book. It was here when I returned
home and I have started reading. I haven't yet found the
Charles McDermott, b. 1810, that I am looking for but I
continue to hope that I will. I will enter all the contests
by the MacDermot clan and I am very happy to have won the
last one. Thank you very much. Colleen

In reply to: Margie Smallfield Ref: Tullaghan
Good to hear Margie, that you've reduced your ancestral search to just 2
places (townlands) in Co. Roscommon, and both options are near the heart
of McDermott country - much preferable to the Tullaghan in Co. Leitrim whose
pics I put up on my website.
Tullaghan (Kilnamanagh Parish) is shown on a map in MacDermot of Moylurg
(page 437, #175). Property there was owned by Terence MacDermot in 1635/41.
The second Tullaghan is about 2 miles southeast of Bellanagare, a place also
mentioned in my father's book. You can find it on one of the very useful
maps (of Kilcorkey parish?) on the Leitrim-Roscommon page - look down the
bottom of the links page on this site
I'll have a look in the phone book myself, but you might do better contacting
someone who lives in the area. I'll see what I can do
-----------------------------------------
Hello:
I have just gotten some information that verifies that my GG Grandparents
were living in Tullaghan Ireland, County Roscommon. I would like to ask anyone
in Ireland who has access to phone directory in Tullaghan to send me the
names and addresses of any McDermotts currently living there. I have no idea
of how much work this may be but I certainly would appreciate it. If there
are too many perhaps you could direct me to a source for this information.
Thank you so much.
Margie
-----------------------------------------
My greatgrandfather, Patrick McDermott (b. 2-18-1832), came from the town
of Mullingar in Westmeath to the Wilmington Delaware area in the mid1850's.
He was the son of Patrick McDermott and Anne Cormac (McCormack). His siblings
appear to include: Catherine (b. 1828-died llikely in infancy), Bridget (b.
1830), Catherine (b. 1834), Mary (b. 1837) and John (b. 1839). I do not know
if other family members left Ireland, although I have not been able to find
marriage records for them there.
My Patrick married Biddy Deegan. They had six children, Anna Catherine, James
and Mary (all born in Delaware between 1857-1862). Margaret (b. 1866 in Ohio),
Theresa (b. 1868 in Michigan) and Emily (b. 1871 in Illinois).
The family is on the 1880 census in Warsaw, Illinois.
In 1900 they are in Chicago Illinois and remained there until their deaths.
Their son, James, my grandfather, married Anna Mabel Brougham (Broughan,Bracken)
from Euclid Ohio.
I would like to find McDermott relatives of my greatgrandfather's siblings.
I am also interested in eventually learning whether Patrick and Bridget met
and married here or in Ireland.
I hope this rings bells for some of you McDermott clansfolk out there.

In reply to: Gene Mc Dermott Ref: The Book.
Information on the book is found in the 'Clan Shop' on the Home Page you
just left. I have not seen a copy in Washington state for a long time. The
local Irish shops sold out fast here. You can oder from this site, however.
-----------------------------------------
Does anyone know if this book is available in the U.S.?
I have a copy but it does not belong to me. The author is Dermot Mac Dermot
and is published by Drumlin Publications in Leitrum.
-----------------------------------------
There is a new message dated Sept. 23, 'Salmon Weir Bridge' by Pobelete Geraghty
on the Leitrim-Roscommon Bulletin Board. In a wonderful account she mentions
a Miss McDermott married to a George Geraghty. If you are looking for this
surname link see the story.

Ellen McDermott married Michael Hogan in Sale , Australia
in 1863 , and I think the place in Armagh that she came
from was Kilmire . Her father was Daniel McDermott and
her mother was Briget Geruty .Thanks for your help.

My McDermott ancestors left county Armagh from the Catholic
parish of Killevy. Check with local Ireland on the net and
leave a message. I've received some nfo on McDermotts
from south Armagh but not my family. The Parish of
Crossmagellen has some genealogical info on McDermott's.
If you know the parish or a townland associated with your
ancestor, I may be able to help a little further.

I have just discovered the photos you took of Tullaghan, Ireland. You are
wonderful for doing this. I have not checked your maps for some time and
was pleasantly surprised with the photos you took. Now I must figure out
a way to find my ancestors in Tullaghan. Any ideas or suggestions? I have
names and dates but I am not sure where to do from here. Thanks again

I'm looking for information and ancestry about
Ellen McDermott born in 1841 in Armagh . Her father was
Daniel McDermott (blacksmith) and I think her mother was
Briget Geruty . She married Michael Hogan in 1863 at Sale ,
Victoria , Australia. She is my Great Grandmother.
-----------------------------------------
My Mother writes that there was also a Grace McDermott in the family, but
that she believes that Grace was Joshua's mother, and not a McDermott at
all as she would have married into the McDermott family. However, the names
may help us make a match somewhere. Carol

In reply to: Sharon Lyons
I have just discovered this site and think it a great forum for exchanging
news and geneological research. However I have learned that a clan gathering
was planned for August in Quebec and now I'm too late to get in on it.
My husband's ancestors according to a study done by one of his cousins were
Michael McDermott b 1797 in (we think) County Mayo, Ire. He married Hanora
CAVANAUGH and emigrated with his children in 1840-50 to Cantley, Quebec.
His children were Mary b 1827, Catherine b 1831 Julia b 1834, Michael b.
1837 and Patrick b. 1837 (possibly twins, it seems to run in this family).
Another Son Martin b. 1841.
I have about 400 descendants of Patrick McDermott who married Margaret GUNN
in 1867 and had Michael , Joseph, Ambrose and Paul August. Then he married
Pamela McGOEY and had Anna Theresa, Florence Hanna, Lillian Mary, William
Patrick, Thomas Francis, Edward, Helena, Gertrude Agnes and Emelie.
Would like to know more about Michael b 1797 and any descendants of their
children other than Patrick (but would like to connect with any of his
descendants too), Also more about the descendants of Patrick's first wife
Margaret GUNN.
Maybe some of these relatives attended the gathering in Quebec or met someone
who was related. Sorry I missed it.
-----------------------------------------
My mother writes that she had a cousin, Joshua McDermott.
He was slightly older than she is, so we estimate that his
birth date was somewhere from 1915 to 1924. He lived in
Philadelphia. Mother is descended from Julia Ann McDermott,
b. 1853 to John McDermott and Eliza (DOWNEY). Does anyone
have a Joshua in their tree? Carol
-----------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------
Terrance McDermott b.1776, m. Mary or Margeret McDonald b.1810. Children
include William b.1831; Tim b.1834; Mary b.1839 - all born in Ireland.
Mary (b.1839) was my g-g-grandmother. They settled in Downie TWP., Perth
Co., Ontario, Canada. Terrance was an Irish Catholic farmer. Spelled McDermid
on 1851 census. Location of my McDermott's home in Ireland would be helpful.
-----------------------------------------
Descendants of Anthony McDermott who served in the American Civil War as
a Private in the 69th , Pennsylvania Volunteers will find numerous references
to his experiences at the Battle of Gettysburg in the publication"Pickett's
Charge at Gettysburg", John Michael Priest, Beidel Printing House, Shippensburg,
PA. 1998. He is prominently mentioned five times in the description of the
repulse of Pickett's Charge, which irrevocably altered American History.
-----------------------------------------
The next issue of the North American McDermott Newsletter is going to press
and will soon be mailed to members of the Clan who returned the subscription
form in 1997. If your address has changed please let me know by e-mail
ASAP.
-----------------------------------------
I too have a Miles or two in my McDermott family. My great grandfather Miles
was born in Ohio, but his father William was born in 1839 in Ireland and
his mother Mary Ann Doran born in Canada. Three other children were previously
born to Wm. and Mary Ann in Canada. That is all I know about the mcDermotts
at this time. If you find something that may indicate we are searching the
same family let me know.

Hi! I read your message, I am also a decendent of the Mcdermotts of NYC.
My original ancestor was Philip
Mcdermott, he came in about 1816. (We think). His wife
was Margaret Miller. If you are related, please respond,
I can't seem to find anything else, I'm not even sure
where they originated. Thanks so much.

Greetings to all. I am researching the McDermott name for my husband, John
Edward McDermott. He knows his grandfather's name was Bernard Joseph McDermott
from Baltimore, MD. That is all he knows as yet. I am going to Baltimore
this week to research further. If anyone has info on a Bernard Joseph McDermott
of Baltimore please contact me. Thanks!
