I have just received naturalization records for my great uncle. On these
papers it lists his place of birth as Tullaghan, Ireland. I have checked
various maps I have of Ireland and have not found this city. I am hoping
someone in Ireland can help me with this. In order to search for birth records
I need to know the county. All help will be greatly apprecated.
Thank You

Have you tried to write to the county of Astabula Historical Society? Many
time a local history group will have old records that date before the 1890's.
You may need to write to the counties around the area due to changes in county
lines over time. Old historical maps of Ohio would help to show you what
county Astabula was in around the 1880's. Also look in Ohio STATE cencus
records.Good luck.
----------------------------------------- I am seeking information about
my grandfather's family. His name
was Miles McDermott and he was born in Ohio (perhaps Astabula)
in 1876. He had brothers named Tom, Will and George and sisters
named Gertrude and Margaret. His mother was Mary Ann Doran
and she was born around 1850 somewhere in Canada. I am at
a standstill here--the McDermotts did not tell much about
themselves! If anyone can give me any help I will appreciate
it. I have not been able to locate a birth certificate in
Ohio for him.

In reply to: Sheila Perry You state you are trying to contact a cousin
Martha McDermott
in Cincinnati, Ohio. My grandfather, Miles McDermott, was born
in Ohio around 1876 and his mother was from Canada, Mary Ann
Doran. I cannot find any record of him but if he or his
brothers Tom, Will, George, or sisters Gertrude and Margaret
are familiar to you I would appreciate any information.

Anyone looking for a Winifred McDermott married to a Stephen Feeney from
Co. Leitrim? If so,see March 20th listing 'searching for family' on the
Leitrim-Roscommon Board. That site is listed under 'Links' here on the MacDermot
Site.

I am looking for information on Sean Mac Diarmada. (Yes, the Sean Mac Diarmada
of the Easter Rising of 1916). My Great Grandmother, I believe her name was
Bessie, was his sister. She came to the United States in the early 1900's
and married a Walsh. My Grandfather, John Walsh, was their son. I beleive
that they lived in Boston. Any information that anyone can provide would
be greatly appriciated. Thank You.

I am looking for the current family of this group:
Michael, born 1803.
Ellen, wife, born 1807.
Son Michael, born 1831.
Daughter Anne, born 1839.
Daughter Betty,born 1833.
Daughter Ellen, born 1837.
Daughter Maria, born 1835.
The family was from Kilglass parish, Co. Roscommon. All children born in
same location. Year of emigration to US 1847.This family should have been
together on the US 1850 Census. Please review your recordes and let me know.
Thank you.

I have finally found my G Grandfather on the Connecticut 1900 census. I am
thrilled as I have been searching a long time. On the census report it lists
his
occupation as "moulder brass". My question to anyone who may know is, was
there a brass or perhaps metal industry in Sligo around 1888. That is the
date
he immigrated to the US. I am wondering if he learned this trade in Ireland
or learned it in the US. This clue will perhaps help me to narrow down where
exactly he came from. The family seems to think Sligo, but it not clear if
this is the county or the town. All help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Margie Smallfield

Thanks for responding. Has your address changed? My mail administrator won't
let me reply. I would love for you to find more if it is not too much trouble.
John must have come to America before Siddy and Patric. The ads must have
worked like personals do today. Thanks.

Hello from Canada! My name is Andrew McDermott and I am originally from Toronto,
Ontario Canada and now live in Ottawa, Ontario.
I appreciate your message about providing information on one's family tree,
however, the details in my case are hard to find after my grandfather, who
came to Canada from England at the turn of the Century. In any case, when
I visited Ireland in 1995, I was told by a few reputable sources that the
McDermotts (at least this spelling) came from County Roscommon. I was visting
Ireland with my employer, who at the time was Deputy Prime Minister of Canada
and Minister of Heritage. We met with Mary Robinson, Dick Spring Desmond
Guiness and attended the Rose of Trailee contest. Anyway, my employer, Sheila
Copps, is now Minister of Heritage and the Deputy Prime Ministership belongs
to someone else (it wasn't because of the many draughts I had in Dublin!).
In fact one of the places we visited in Roscommon was Strokestown, where
there is a famine museum, which is really quite good. The driver that we
had, who seemed to know everything and everybody, said that Strokestown was
quite near where the McDermott clan was from, but I could not ascertain this
since we did not have time to investigate further. We visited Strokestown
because it represents one of the harder hit areas of the Great Hunger and
has connections with Canada. Minister Copps, as Minister of Canadian Heritage,
is responsible for our national Parks system and National Historic Sites,
of which Grosse Isle is one, where as you know many Irish landed and many
assumed French Canadian names (and many kept their Irish names and today
are families in Quebec such as the Ryan's and the Johnson's).
This is a long way of explaining that while there are many Irish in America,
there are as many or more on a per capita basis in Canada. McDermotts in
all of their forms are not an especially common name in Canada, although
there are probably a few thousand from coast to coast. There are now two
more, which are my sons Liam (aged two) and Seamus (aged 7 months)!
It is interesting to note that my mother's maiden name is also McDermott.
Her mother's name was Walsh, but her mother's mother name was again McDermott
(I'm not trying to prove I'm crazy). Any help you can suggest in getting
my act together regarding my own family tree is greatly appreciated.
Andrew.

May we take this opportunity to thank all of you who have
so far submitted your family trees for inclusion in the
"Family Trees" area of the Web site. In many ways this area
should be the most important part of our online venture as
it is here that a permanent archive of MacDermot history is
to be found.
May we remind existing members of the Clan that whilst submission
of family trees is by no means a compulsory condition of membership,
and whilst recognizing that compilation of a family tree can
take many years of dedicated research, we do recommend highly that
all members (and non members too) who are in possession of a
family tree, no matter how incomplete, take the effort to
submit their tree to the Clan for inclusion in the archive.
Please use the facility provided within the "Family Tress" page
as this is automatic and cost effective.
Thank you for your cooperation.

This is a very small section of Joseph John McDermott's descendants in Australia.
I can only assume
that he was never married in Ireland but I can't be too sure about Ellen,
his wife, as she came to this
country as Ellen Ryan but when she married Joseph John she used the name
Ellen Hourigan. There is
no record of an Ellen Hourigan entering the country. A nice little mystery
that I would love to solve. JJ
came as ship's crew and Ellen as free settler. Not absolutely sure of JJ's
place of birth but am
reasonably sure Ellen was from Tulla in Co. Clare JJ, my father said, claimed
kinship of some sort
with the MacDermots of Coolavin but I can find no proof. Probably whishful
thinking on his part. He
was a sailor. Merchant Navy before he settled in Australia where he captained
many coastal vessels,
sailing also to Norfolk Island and New Zealand. I have the full, up-to-date
and absolutely enormous,
family tree if anyone is interested.
For the purpose of this entry I have only concentrated on my direct line
of descent I would be very
grateful if anyone can shed any light on Ellen's past (most unlikely) or
any information regarding JJ's
parents. All we know they were probably Michael and Mary McDermott and possibly
originally from
Co.Sligo or Co.Roscommon probably born around 1780-1790.
Love to hear from anyone who could help. Or possibly I can help you. You
can email me on

I just got done talking to my dad and have received more information about
my McDermotts. I really don't know how accurate the information will be.
My grandmother tended to keep secrets about herself and the family. But if
anything sounds familiar please let me know.
My father was named James Miller McDermott at birth, Aug. 13, 1931 at Maternity
Hospital in Glasgow, Scotland. He had always thought he was named James Miller
Theobald until he sent for his birth certificate a few years ago. He immigrated
to the states in 1950. His mother's birth certificate has her named, Mary
McDermott b. May 10, 1898, in the District of Govan, County of Lanark
(Scotland?). Her death certificate names her Veronica Mary Russell, d. 1981,
in Stockholm, Sweden. Her parents were Jane and Thomas McDermott. His occupation
at the time was a ship caulker journeyman. Thomas McDermott was probably
born around 1855 (don't know if in Ireland or Scotland) and died in Glasgow
in 1940 around the age of 85. He apparently was a cranky ol' coot.
He and his wife Jane had several children and my grandmother was the youngest.
Jane died when my gmother was a young girl. Some of their children's names
are: William, Phillip, Alice, Annabella. Jane McDermott was a Cairney. Her
father was William Cairney and her mother Catherine McGuire (McGuire's bridge?)
from the county of Formanagh. Thomas McDermott's father was Malachai (sp?)
McDermott. He had several children: John, Joseph, Phillip, Isabella, Maria,
and Malachai. Maria McDermott moved to Texas. Isabella married a Cassidy.
They had to leave Rosinvar County between 1860 and 1873. Malachai Jr. died
I think in 1873 due to bubonic plague. Then somehow there is also Sweeny's
that are related here. Maybe Malachai Sr. married a Sweeny?
I am trying to contact a cousin of mine, Martha McDermott from Cincinnati,
OH for more information about the family.
