PBS Broadcast of "The Irish in America"

Dear Clan Members,

I expect many of you here in the States have been following the PBS three-part broadcast of "The Irish In America." The first Irish gentleman appearing is my uncle, Tom MacDiarmada, of Allia, Co. Galway. Tom is a renowned shanachie and an abslotulety charming man who joined us at the first Clan Reunion in 1993. His portrait as drawn by my father Normand Martin is feartured in a 1993 or 1994 MacDermott Clan Association Journal. He relates a "hardyman's history" of Macdermotts of Galway in a 1996 Journal.
Later in that first broadcast Felicity MacDermott makes a fine appearance, being a true authority of Irish history. Thank you, Felicity, for representing us so well !
The final broadcast is tonight (Wednesday, January 28).
Don't miss it !

McDermott's in Illinois

I don't have the answer to you question, however the president of my family reunion committee might.
My father is a McDermott and is one of the officers of the committee. Bob Stillman is the committee president and he might have some information regarding your question. We have our reunion every year the Sunday before Labor Day. It is at a park outside of Eldorado, Ill.
I don't have Bob's address but you could get it from my father, Jack McDermott, at 1304 Harvey Land, Rolla. Mo. Good luck on your quest.

Custom and dress

First, let me say that if you have difficulty responding
to this message, our university system has been experiencing
some malady--be patient, my mail eventually gets to me.
My daughter asked me the other day if, at one time, was
there a particular color, costume or form of dress for those of
the MacDermot clan. Thought you might be able to help
answer this question. Carol

In reply to: toby brief Ref: Reply to Toby Brief There is a will in the National Archives, Dublin, of
Bryan Mc Dermott of Ballinlough, Co. Roscommon, probated
1836. To his wife Catherine Blyghe he left £50 plus £30
per annum for life. He had two brothers: 1) John, lived
in Cloonlee, died 1832, who had sons Patrick and Bernard,
and a daughter Eloise to whom he left each £50.
ii)Patrick, M.D., deceased, who had a son Bernard to whom
he left £50 and a house and plot in Castlerea. Bryan
himself had two sons, Bernard and Thomas (d.1865). To his
grandson Edward (Bernard's son) he left 2 houses and a plot
of land in Ballyfinegan (near Ballintubber); to his
grandaughter Eleanor (daughter of Bernard) £100; to her
sister Maria £50, and £200 to be divided between their other
siblings, Patrick, John, James, Anne, Bernard, and
Michael; to Bridget Catherine, daughter of son Thomas £50;
£100 to son Thomas and a new house in Ballinlough;
£50 to Anne Kelly, Bernard's wife; to his siter Bridget,
married to George Carter, £50 and the rents of the lands
at Rusheens; to his son Bernard title to the farms
at Derrycharane and Cloonlee. He also left the proceeds
of the tolls and customs of the fairs at Ballinlough
(held from Robert Wills of Willsgrove, who along with
Owen Young of Harristown, performed the service of bankers
as well as landlords to the family; they were large
landowners) to his sons.
I also came across this family at the Deeds Office, Dublin,
renewing land leases in the 18th century, in and about
Ballinlough, Castlerea, Ballintubber. A Thomas McDermott
is listed as the owner of 185 acres in 1875. A deed
of 1871 recounts the history of lands (190 acres) held
by Thomas Mc Dermott's sons (William, Henry, and Charles)
and at least two daughters, along with his widow Ellen,
held at Scregg and Cashell (near Castlerea) which were
sold to Hugh Mc Dermot of Coolavin. Branches of this
family are still living and farming around Ballinlough.
Odds are this is your family. Ballinlough is a small
place. My own family is from Castlerea nearby.

Felicity MacDermot added to the program!

Much to my delight, as I watched the 3 part TV progarm, 'Long Journy Home' , I saw a wonderful woman add a reading from a MacDermot back in the 1850's. What a fine job Felicity!

McDermotts in Illinois

My grandmother named her sons after family names. One of the boys was named Dennis McDermott Atwood. They lived in the Robinson IL area. I am trying to find the link with the McDermott family. If anyone has any Smith/Tilroe/Dunning/Atwood in the Illinois area that ties to McDermott, I would sure appreciate the info.

Thanx Gerelyn

Searching for info

I'm trying to find any information on a family by the name of O'Herron. Mary O'Herron emigrated to Canada around the late 1850's or 1860 to meet her betrothed, Terrence Mcdermott. They later moved to Iowa in the United States. He would be my GG grandfather and since the family here is all but gone, any info would be appreciated.

Iceland John William McDermott

My great grandfather came to Iceland in 1897. In 1901 my
grandfather, son of J.W.McDermott, was born. It seems that
my great grandfather left Iceland in 1902 or 1903. He came
to Iceland from Grimsby, England to teach icelandic seamen
to use some kind of fishing equipment. He was 29 years old
in 1901, born in 1872 - 1874 probably in Manchester, England

Relations to Donald Joseph McDermott

Hello there! I am looking for any relatives that are around 80 years old that would be a brother or sister to Donald Joseph McDermott born approx. 1914ish. and died 1997.

He has a sister named Dorothy that lives in northern california.

Alzheimers seems to run on the male side of the family...do you remember any cranky older male relatives that could be related? :)

Thanks,

Danelle McDermott

MacDermot sights in Boyle

The two principal sites in (near) Boyle which relate to
MacDermot history are Boyle Abbey and MacDermot Rock on Lough
Key. The Abbey, a Cistercian monastery, was patronized by
MacDermot for centuries. Many abbots were MacDermots and several
chiefatins were buried there. Castle Island on Lough Key, visible
from the shores of the Forest Park, was home of the Chieftain
from the late 12th Century until the end of the 16th century.
Only the ruins remain, some of which postdate MacDermot's
inhabitance.

To find out more when you are there call to Una Bhan Tourism
located at King House in the centre of the town.

Enjoy your trip !

McDermott landmarks in Boyle

My husband and I are planning to be in Boyle in early March 1998 (6th-7th) and would like to visit any location/property that may have belonged to the McDermott clan. This is where I understand my family came from. Are there any landmarks remaining, like a house, castle or stretch of land? Also, is there a McDermott in Boyle who would be interested in talking with us when we are there? Thank you Maureen McDermott Meyer

McDermot in Hamtramck, MI

Virginia,

You have a birth of a McDermot in Hamtramck MI. I am looking for a Martin and Julia McDermott who had 10 children and are listed in the census for Hamtramck, MI in 1850. Several of their children are listed as born in Ohio or MI interchangeably like they went back and forth over the years, do you have any information on the parents in the MI birth??? Thanks
Diane

Look for Marjorie Sybil McDermott

I have been trying for over a year now to find the parents of my husbands paternal mother. Her name was MARJORIE SYBIL MCDERMOTT. She was born May 1913 in Chicago, Cook Co., IL. She married Clayton Godwin Smiley. We know that she moved around from family to family, and was a one time apart of the foster care system. Supposedly she was abused by an uncle. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Because of her background as a child she would not talk about any of her family or give an clues. She died Jan 1997. I have tried to obtain a copy of her birth certificate but was told that there wasn't one on file. Thank you in advance for any help I receive.

McDermott, Crane, Connor, Dwyer of Roscommon

My grandmother was ANNA MCDERMOTT of Ballinlough, Roscommon. She was born in 1897. She had 8 siblings, John, the oldest son, who lived on the family farm then moved to England, Bernard who came to the US d. @ 1940 and is buried in Kensico, NY, Mary (Molly) who came to the US but returned to Ireland, Martin who may have drowned @1912, Michael who may have been a pilot in England, Jean b. 1880 who came to the US, Kathryn b.1884 who also came to the US and Evelyn b. 1895 who came to the US. Anna came to New York with her sisters to model and nurse. The date is unknown, however, the three girls did return to Ireland to visit in 1922. Anna married and eventually moved to Columbus, Ohio with her husband losing all contact with her family.

Their parents were Bernard and CATHERINE CONNOR. Bernards parents were PETER MCDERMOTT and MARY CRANE. Catherine's parents were BARTHOLOMEW CONNOR and MARY CATHERINE DWYER. Mary Catherine was the daughter of PETER DWYER and MARY ?.

I know that there were descendants in Ballinlough, but got no responses to queries. If anyone has any info I would be thrilled!
