I am trying to trace my McDermod / Dermody family from Ireland, I believe
from County Mayo. My gg-grandmother Mary McDermod was born around 1838 and
was married to a Patrick Stanton (b abt 1835). I know they had four children
who were born in Stockport, Manchester, England between 1856 and 1866. On
two of her children's birth certificates the mother's maiden name is given
as McDermod and on the other two certificates her maiden name is given as
Dermody. Unfortunately Mary could not read or write and she just put a cross
as the mark of the mother. She obviously could not understand that her name
had in effect been changed by the English authorities. If anyone can guide
me as to what direction to take to try and trace my gg-grandparents and their
ancestors I would be most grateful. I have been told that they came from
the Castlebar / Westport area. In case there are other family members out
there here are the names of their four children :- Michael b 7 Feb. 1856,
Ellen b 1 Jan. 1860, Mary b 21 May 1861 and Ann b 3 Mar. 1866, they were
all born at Etchells Street, Stockport. (for interest Ann is my
g-grandmother).
Best wishes to everyone for 1998.

On behalf of everybody here involved with the MacDermot web site,
I would like to wish all MacDermots around the world the very
best for a peaceful Christmas.
The MacDermot site has continued to grow and prosper over the
last year. This is due in no small way to the support and
encouragement we have received from so many of you all over the
world. We are honoured and humbled that you consider the site to be
an important aspect of your own sense of family.
We look forward with great anticipation to meeting more McDermotts
in 1998.

In reply to: Mary
Kiltrustan is neither a village or a town, rather the name of a parish
which lies between Strokestown and Elphin in County Roscommon. The church
was founded by St. Patrick himself. Parish records, if they go back
that far may be able to assist you in your search for information.

The New macDermot Clan site is now hosted at http://macdermot.com

I ask that bug reports be sent to me at MacBugs@renview.com

My grand mother, Veronica Mary McDermott was born in 1898, in Glasgow, Scotland
to Jane and Thomas McDermott. Her parents were born in Ireland, but I don't
know where. She was the youngest of several children and her mother died
when she was very young. Some of her siblings were: William, Phillip, Annabella
(who was called Auntie Jimmy), and Alice. Her brother William had children
named Martha, Nan, and Kathy to name a few. Martha currently lives in Cincinatti,
Ohio and is a Montessori teacher. My father is James Miller Russell and his
sister Olive Thor lives in Stockholm. Sweden. My grandmother married an
Englishman named Fredrick Theobald, but apparently he was also married to
someone else. Her two children, Olive and James, were technically born out
of wedlock, and this was a very painful sourse of shame for her being a Roman
Catholic. She then married an abusive alcoholic by the name of Robert Russell,
but left him during WWII with the children and moved to Sweden. My father,
James, immigrated to the US in 1950. I am wanting to learn more about my
family history and would be interested if anyone is related to me.
-----------------------------------------
I have listed some of the McDermott's that I have found on ship lists in
past months here on the site. Please look back a few months and see if your
John is there.
-----------------------------------------
John McDermott/Dermond/Durman was born abt 1797.According to the family stories
handed down he was born in Sligho County, Ireland.
He married Eleanor Ferguson in 1828 in Botetourt Co., Virginia and lived
in the aread that later became Roanoke County, Virginia.
I do not know his parents names.His children were: Mary Magdalene;Mathew;
Calvin Prichard;Nancy Ann; catherine Elizabeth;Sarah Ellen;
Louisa Margaret; and Eliza Jane. John McDermott died 1851 in Roanoke County,
Virginia.
-----------------------------------------
My gr, gr, grandfather, Michael McDermott married Ellen (Byron)(daughter
of Martin Byron & Catherine)
According to Michael's obituary he was born in Leeds, England on 20 Mar 1839
to John and Ann (Ratchford) McDermott. He came to America in 1863and d. 22
May 1897.
I have copies of naturalization records for one Michael McDermott in Braintree,
MA arriving in New York 18 Mar 1862, however, it gives an entirely different
birthdate.
Michael & Ellen McDermott had at least 6 known children; Mary Ann b.
1865 d. 1928, *Ella Marie b. 29 Jan 1866 d. 22 Jul 1935, Margaret b. 1868
d. 1869, William McDermott b. 1870 d. 1870, Annie M. b. 1871 d. 1872 and
Maggie Agnes b. 1873 d. ukn.
I have much more details especially with my direct line from my *gr, grandmother
to present. Those who survived all lived and died in the Braintree, Quincy
area in Massachusetts. I would be thrilled beyond words to hear from anyone
with these same names.
Regards,
Barbara
P.S.
Please also see June notices for my listing following a George McDermott,
7th Cavalry, (parents are Luke and Margaret McDermott from Co. Roscommon).

It sometimes happens that we are unable to reply to visitors
to the MacDermot website because they have not entered their
email address correctly when signing the Guest Book. There
seems to be little we can do about this from this end except
to remind you to check before you send your message that the
address is correct.
Thanks in the meantime

The closest I have seen for your townland is Killtullivarry. It was a little
part of what was renamed Ballykilcline, Co. Roscommon, Kilglass parish in
the 1834 English land mapping. Also, Bungariff/Aghamore/Culleenaghamore was
in same townland after 1834. All were in Ballintober North Barony. If this
is 'close enough' to chech into see the Ballykilcline site at
www.Ballykilcline.com

Would any Clan member know anything about a small town/village called Kiltrustan,
near Strokestown.Roscommon
Our Great Grandfather Peter McDermott was born in Kiltrustan on December
17th 1832.

Hello, I don't know any of you, but would like to hear from you.
My paternal grandmother is Brenda McDermot(Osborne) and her sisters were
Ingred & Karin. Her brother was Neil. I would like to know more about
this, if possible. For instance, the spelling of Gladys maiden name and Hugh's
entire name.
Let me know or just say "hi."
