I am interested in finding out about my ancestor Alexander McDermott B. about
1798 in Ireland in county Donegal. He arrived in Canada sometime before 840,which
is the first I know of him. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Looking for information on a Mr. McDermott, who married a Ruth Gibson. Ruth
Gibson, d/o Thomas Gibson & Margaret E. Ow, was born May 1886, in Indiana

around 1918, and Gary, Indiana. This is all I know of them. Any information
may be helpful, thanks.

Thanks for the information from the 1850 records but the folks are not mine.
I will keep the names in case someone can match them later on.

they may be related to (I don't know much
about my history yet), I'd like to hear from you. I promise I will write

children James aged 6, born in Ireland, Charles aged 3 born in
Canada, Mary Jane aged 1 born in NY and William J. aged 3 mos
born also in New York on the 1850 New York Census for Niagara
county. Hugh was 29 and Jane was 27. Their last name was

The lists of state-aided Crown passengers that arrived during 1847-48 were
compiled by the emigration commissioners of the State of New York. The 'Roscius'
arrived on 22 October 1847, and the remaining ships bearing the Ballykilcline
emigrants followed during the next six months. Unfortunately, the New York
lists are incomplete and cannot be compared with the embarkation lists taken
by the English government emigrant agents in Liverpool for the Colonial Office,
which are only fragmentary for those years. Some, but not all, of the missing
Ballykilcline emigrants might be accounted for these gaps in the record.
Also, it was not unheard of for a hungry family to 'sell' their place to
another family who would assume their identity for the voyage. Only the age,
condition, and numbers of steerage passengers would be of any interest to
the ship's officer at the gangplank.
Remember to use New York State census and the Mortality schedules available
at the US National Archives. All three McDermott families from Ballykilcline
did make the crossing alive. The family of Hugh and Eliza McDermott pushed
on to other states for land and work.

I am looking for information about my family's history. The only thing that
I have to go on so far is that my great great grandfather was a MacDermott
and when he was about 14 he was left with a family who's last name was Baker,
so he took on their last name when he enlisted in the Civil War. I dont know
if it is possible for anyone to shed some light on my search but if you know
anything or have any suggestions please email me. The only other thing I
know about him is that he married a full blooded Cherokee Indian.
thanks for your time.

Aa part of the continuing development of the MacDermot family
website we plan to introduce personalized home pages for
McDermotts. For a small setup and annual rental fee you will
be able to configure your own McDermott homepage, directly
linked to and from the MacDermot Clan Home Page with the
address \macdermot.com\.....
It is envisaged that this facility will greatly enhance the
already active McDermott presence on the internet.
Keep your eyes on the home page for developments or email
Rory MacDermot at this address for further details.

November 15th 1847
Father Michael McDermott spoke out vociferously against the
local landlord Denis Mahon, of Strokestown, County Roscommon.
Major Denis Mahon and Father McDermott often clashed, the latter
accusing the former of amusing himself in London whilst his
30,000 tenants starved. The kind Major Mahon's response was
to appoint a land agent to oversee the depopulation of his
estates, mainly by enforced emigration.
It is of no surprise that Major Mahon was shot dead. Father
Michael McDermott was accused of inciting the assassins but
no charges were upheld.
Does anybody recognize an ancestor in Father Michael ? If so
why not let us know ?
Information taken (with thanks) from today's Irish Times Famine Diary.
As a postscript it seems somewhat ironic that the much
vaunted Famine Museum, visited last year by the MacDermot
Caln Gathering, is located within the very buildings which
Major Denis Mahon used to know as "home".

Thanks again Rory for your interest. As I understand it my Great Great
Grandfather was born at Banagher Co.Offaly in about 1780,he died at Clonmel
in 1845 aged 64. Ihave seen his headstone in the churchyard at Powerstown.

Recently my brother John McDermott died, not knowing much about my maiden
name, I decided to search the net.
Very interesting pages, I will of course visit again. However if I am able
to help anybody, My fathers name is Gerald McDermott and he was born in Bradford
on 28.10.29. I will try to find more and put a message on the noticeboard.

Further consultation of material to hand contradicts what I
have already stated i.e. O'Diarmada was from Donegal. The
Donegal sept is O'Dermond (O Duibhdiorma). O'Diarmada or
Dermody/Darmody in English are (according to MacLysaght) a
well scattered bunch originating from counties as far apart
as Galway, Cavan, Westmeath and Kilkenny. It is also likely
that the English authorities probably sometimes translated
MacDiarmada to Dermody as well, so the picture becomes more
confusing.
To confuse matters more we are not sure whether O Diarmada
came from Mac Diarmada or whether they were a separate and
disparate (by the geographical evidence) lot. A considerable
amount more research needs to be done here in Ireland in order
to establish the facts.
In the meantime, if you let us know what information you have,
then I might be able to tell you what would be the best course
of action to take.
Peter Darmody of Brisbane is a member of the MacDermot Clan
Association. Other Dermody and Darmody people have left messages
on the Notice Board over the last year.

Rory, many thanks for your reply. Have youany idea where I might find more
information on the O'Diarmada

A gathering similar to the one so successfully planned and
held this year in Washington is being planned for Summer 1998.
The location is to be Quebec City. Sharon Lyons has kindly
offered to coordinate the event and we would like to ask
for volunteers to assist. If interested please email me,
Rory MacDermot, and let me know what you would be willing to do
to help.
Quebec City should be a very suitable location. Apart from
the fact that it is one of Canada's most beautiful cities,
it is also the point throough which many Irish would have
entered Canada (Grosse Isle).
Looking forward to hearing form you

In last Saturday's issue of the Irish Times I came across the
following in the "Famine Diary" which reprints articles from
newspapers and journals from the time of the famine :
November 8th 1847
"....The Roscius [emigrant ship which carried many McDermotts
to USA] arrives at Staten Island after a crossing of 44 days
with the first batch of Ballykilcline exiles. Although she
reports no losses at sea, the Roscius lands only 43 Crown
emigrants in New York, leaving 68 men, women and children
missing somewhere between Strokestown [Co. Roscommon] and
Staten Island...."
Curious to say the least, what can have become of them ?
Any ideas Maureen ?

In reply to: William Darmody
Whilst it is known that Darmody, Dermody, Kermode and other english
language forms can be various manifestations of Mac Diarmada
it is also true that Dermody and Darmody might belong to
O Diarmada a separate and much smaller sept based in Donegal
The O Diarmada were unrelated to Mac Diarmada, as far as we know.

I was wondering if there are any McDermott's still in Co. Durham

Goodman. Their children were Peter 1867, Maria 1870, Mary Feb. 5, 1878
Patrick abt 1880. Mary McDermott was born in Sunderland and was
married in Easington Lane.

MY Irish cousins ,when they need to use the Irish form of the name use
O'DIARMAIDA.
Could you explain this?.
My other query: What is the origin of the coat of arms? i.e. to whom was
it first granted?
