As you have probably seen from the website our next scheduled
MacDermot Clan Gathering is for 1999, the weekend of August 15th.
It will take place in Boyle, Co. Roscommon, Ireland - this is
at the heart of old Moylurg.
There is a possibility of a McDermott day out next year in
Montreal, I believe. Look out for further details.
As far as MacDermot t shirts, jumpers etc. we are investigating
the feasibility of doing something, but nothing is available yet.
I think that we should be in a position to start offering
garments for sale next year sometime. Once more - watch this
space.

Many people have wondered about the origin of our Coat of Arms.
It is in fact one of several which have been used throughout
the years, and whilst it is now currently accepted as being
the true MacDermot Coat of Arms there have been several
variations upon the theme.
It would take up too much space on the Notice Board to go
into great detail, so I shall write an article for The Library
in the next week or so.
Keep your eyes peeled !

I just deceided to look up our family name and was so thrilled to discover
everything that there was to offer. I would like to find everything that
there is to know about the clan, meetings e-mails,picnics,etc.etc. I would
llke to see sweatshirts and t-shirts w/ the family crest as well. Again thanks
to everyone involved w/ this web site. Sincerly, Steven J McDerment

There is a fine artical regarding new archaeological information about County
Roscommon in the Sept/Oct. issue of "ARCHAEOLOGY". Professor Charles Orser,
Jr. covers Irish redware found during excavations in 1996 and 1997. Future
work will be done in the area over the next three years.

Congratulations to Michael Cheesley for spotting that Yvette
McDermott is a great grand daughter of Joseph MacDermot,
younge brother of High Hyacinth MacDermot, Prince of Coolavin,
great great grandfather of this correspondent. Yvette therefore
becomes but the latest addition to the MacDermot main branch
which descends directly from the Kings of Moylurg. Without the
Internet this lost link (for us) might never have come to light
Great News !!! My little sister, Siobhan (known to many of you)
marries Dominic Ryan next month, October 25th. Felicitations
by email to Siobhan MacDermot

MacDermot Clan membership - since coming on line last year we
have welcomed over 50 new members to the Clan Association, many
from USA.
McDermott North American Newsletter - I would like to take
this opportunity to acknowledge personnal the great work of
Maureen Humphreys and Pamela Gibson Bingham in preparing the
first issue which many of you will have received by now.
Please, please make sure that you keep them supplied with
material for future issues as the publictaion depends on your
support for its success
MacDermot Journal - The Autumn edition will be prepared soon.
Material is greatly encouraged for submission from McDermotts
who would like to contribute. Once again this is your journal
and will flourish only with your support.
Spelling - now that the notice board ia automatic I would ask
those who contribute to check their spelling before submitting
messages. We have no editorial input now and cannot correct
bad spelling.
That's all folks

My name is Michael McDermott, and my wife and I are trying to
adopt. The desire of our heart is to adopt a baby or child
from Ireland. We are trying to find someone who could provide
us with any leads or information to get us started. Our efforts
so far have been unsuccessful, but we have not given up hope!
If anyone has any information that would help us, we would be
incredibly grateful. Thank you in advance!!

Back from the two week long darkness imposed by broken hard
disk. Apologies to all who might be awaiting mail from me.
Such is the volume that comes through now that it might be
a few days before I reply to all.
Thanks for writing and keep it coming.

My McDermott's are:
Father: John A. McDermott (Scranton, PA)
Grandfather: Archibald A. McDermott (Scranton, PA)
G-Grandfather: John Francis McDermott (Palo Alto, PA)
GG-Grandfather: John Cassidy McDermott (Rush, PA)
GGG-Grandfather: Francis MacDermott (Ireland)
John Cassidy McDermott was born near Tempo Co Fermanagh
in 1818. He sailed to NYC in the summer of 1839 on the
sailing ship Powhattan. His father Francis left Ireland
in 1847 and settled in Port Carbon PA.
In September of 1993, my wife and I went to Tempo and
were able, with help, to find the remains of the McDermott
FarmHouse. It was a great conclusion to years of research.
I am more than willing to share my research with others to
expand on my quite-wide family tree. Looking through the
MacDermott Clan homepage; I see very few McDermotts who
came from Co. Fermanagh.
Regards,
James McDermott

As mentioned in "Ireland of the Welcomes" magazine (Vol. 43
No. 2 March-April 1994), the MacDermot motto has been
variously translated: "Honor probataque virtus" (honor
and approved valor) and "Honor et virtus" (Honor and virtue).
I have also seen a Mcdiarmid motto of "Amicis Semper Fidelis"
(to friends ever true).
The arms of the MacDermots of Coolavin feature a boar's-head
motif which may be related to Irish romance ("Toraigheacht
Dhiarmada agus Ghrainne"...the pursuit of Dermot and
Grainne) in which Grainne, bethrothed to the hero Fionn mac
Cumhaill, elopes instead with Dermot. Fionn's pursuit of
the lovers through the country ends when Dermot is killed
by the great boar of Ben Bulben in Co. Sligo.

I just stumbled on this page looking for the McDermott

Are there other McDermotts (Dermody) doing research on
their family lines who have ancestors from County Westmeath-
especially Mullingar? My great grandfather came from there. I
believe other McDermotts from there (siblings, cousins) came
as well.

In reply to: McDermot family page
I just had received a letter from Felicity today 9/4/97..
so it is not archival. I should have mentioned that
Nellie Dillon was from Ballaghadarreen. Also relatives
who had auburn hair supposedly got that from the McDermot
side. Bartholomew is such an unusual name. Does anyone
else have that name of whom you have heard?
Isn't E-Mail marvelous. Regards,
Sharon Callaghan

In reply to: Felicity McDermott
Was in Ireland looking up my Dillon family history. My great-great grandmother
was Nellie Dillon who married Bartholomew McDermott. I don't have a birthdate
for Bartholomew but he married Nellie (Ellin) in February 1841.
They had eight children. On April 5, 1859 he was thrown from a horse and
killed, his last child being born one month after his death. Nellie remarried
and emigrated to the U.S. with all the children. I hope to learn more.
Nellie was so proud of her Dillon ancestry and we have several members down
to the present generation who have Dillon as a middle name.
Felicity told me about you.
Thank you,
Sharon Callaghan

Greetings Cousins!
I don't know if this belongs here or not, but I thought some of you might
be interested in seeing the new website that I recently created (I'm a beginner
at this, so I hope it works
well for you). It is called "Coolavin's Forest" (for obvious reasons) and
may be located at:
http://members.aol.com/coolavin/index.html
It is still undergoing construction, but I think you will be pleasantly surprised
at the amount of resources there
.
If you like it, or have suggestions for improvements or additions, please
feel free to e-mail me with the information.
Thanks for looking at it! :)
