Ancestral Research

I am looking for information on Patrick Francis McDermott, who emigrated with his brother to Wallaroo in South Australia late last century on one of the iron boats. He was single at the time, and as he died in 1909 he was probably a young or middle aged man at the time. If anyone has any information that may help I would love to hear from them.

LOOKING FOR ALABAMA MCDERMOTTS !!!

I am looking for links to my maternal great-great grandmother Mary Elizabeth Mcdermott. She imigrated to Mobile Alabama around 1869, and married Daniel Thomas Kennedy. She had two sisters, Anne who imigrated with her, but died the next year in Mobile. And Katherine who was sent to bring Mary back to Ireland (She refused to return). I think they came from Six Mile Cross in Ulster, but I am not sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Lisa Balderama

Origin of McDermotts in Southern Armagh

My great, great Grandfather, John McDermott, emigrated to America in 1851 after the death of his son Patrick (1849-1851). His father was a Hugh P. McDermott of Southern Armagh. Both were farmers.
Our family records indicated that they lived in Southern Armagh near Newry, Down. John had several brothers and a sister. Two brothers had to leave Ireland, one for Canada and the other to Australia. This is all we know about John's family in Armagh. We later found records through Armagh Ancestry and Ara Coeli that John and his wife Catherine (McGivern) were married in 1848 in the Catholic Parish of lower Kileavy.
Their first born son, Patrick, was baptized there in 1849. They may have lived in Drumintee. I have become very interested in learning about the history and genealogy of Southern Armagh, especially the baronies of Orior and the Fews, as well as the civil and Catholic Parishes of Killevy and its townlands. MacDermot (McDermott) is not a common name to Armagh and I have found no information on how or when MacDermot (McDermott) got established in Southern Armagh.
Interestingly, I did discover a Ballymacdermot in Southern Armagh in the parish of Killevy that appears to border on Newry, Down. Also, in researching the Moron genealogical libraries, I found that in 1610, 120 acres of the townland of Ballymacdermot were granted by King James I to a Whitechurhe Marmaduke.
I would appreciate any information or suggested sources to further my research into the history of the Gaelic Irish (I have found a lot of info on English and Scotch-Irish landlords) in Southern Armagh and the origin of BallyMacdermot.
Also, I have some extensive information on McDermotts, McGiverns, Gillespie, and Gallagher families that emigrated to the Peoria, ILL area in the 1840s-1850s and some information on McDermotts in western Iowa and the area around Waubay, South Dakota.

McDerment MacDermots

The spelling of MacDermot is most usually seen as McDermott. However there are many accepted versions and McDermont (-ent) is one of the recognised variations. In fact if you look down the messages for this month you will find one from Russie McDerment who is lloking for information on McDorman (another rare exemplar. The reasons for the variations are basically to do with the transcription from Irish to English of the name which is common to us all - Mac Diarmada. For greater explanation please see the article in The Library on the subject.

McDormans in America

McDorman is likely to be a very rare spelling of McDermott, in which case it might be from the MacDermots of Moylurg, or current day Roscommon, Ireland. It is also possible that it could be a variation of Scots McDermott - and we have not been able to establish if there was ever a link between the two. There is also a large concentration of McDermotts in Ulster, principally in the Derry/Donegal area. Again no link has been established between them and the Moylurg MacDermots. Not very clarifying I'm afraid and without a definite link on your side going back to a specific area of Ireland or Scotland there is probably little real chance of finding out.

McDermott, Owen and John etc.

Wondering if my branch of the McDermott family is connected to yours because the names of Owen and John are in our line also. John Daniel McDermott born sometime in late 1880s, possibly two brothers named Owen and Thomas. John Daniel died in 1930s in Folsom Prison after a bank robbery in Los Angeles in 1925. Met his wife Pearl Stobbe Quashnick in Mobridge, South Dakota about 1917. Children: Owen Thomas born 1918, Fern and Doris. Only other clues are that they lived in Salt Lake City in 1918 and in Nevada before Los Angeles. Children were sent to Iowa to live during the Depression after the bank robbery. Only other clue is that John Daniel was possibly Catholic and had some kind of distinguishing mark on his face, although the mark is not clear in the one photograph we have.

PENTON CLEVELAND From: "Jim McDermott"
Date: Fri, 6 Jun 1997 10:16:30 -0400 Subject:

Dear Rory:
We learn something new every day. Yes, there is a McDermott, Ohio, located on State Route 73, Northwest of Portsmouth, Ohio. Population: approximately 500. I made a phone call to the local post office and found the person known as the local historian. His name is John Thompson and he lives in the house build in the 1800's by the McDermott family. He purchased the home from Ralph McDermott, only son of the original McDermott settlers. As far as Mr. Thompson knows, these McDermotts came to American from Scotland. He is still in contact with Ralph McDermott and will verify their origins. The McDermotts were well known for the stone quarry they owned and operated. Many roads and buildings from Portsmouth to Cincinnati and beyond used stone from their quarry. An aside: Ralph McDermott 's father was known as "Stubby" as he had one leg missing. The McDermott Stone Quarry was eventually sold to a man named Taylor and it became the Taylor Stone Quarry, eventually sold to a New York company. The other claim to fame for McDermott, Ohio is that Roy Rogers, cowboy movie star of the 1950's was born and raised in this area. In fact, this month they are hosting the Roy Rogers Festival, evidently an annual event.. And that's what I know about McDermott, Ohio.

Annie McDerment

I am currently searching for information on my fathers side of my family tree. His father Hugh McDerment Bull was born in Ballymahon, Longford Co. on May 26, 1908. He immigrated to New York in the late 1920's. He had a brother William and a sister Connie. Their father was Robert Bull and mother was Annie McDerment. Robert was a game keeper on an estate in Longford Co.
Is McDerment a common spelling difference?

McDermott Place Names

I have it on fairly good authority that McDermitt, NV was originally Fort McDermott named for a General McDermott. For some reason the person or persons who named the town insisted on spelling it McDermitt. McDermott, OH once had large number of members of the Slye family (there are still some there). The most notable was one Leonard Slye who changed his name to Roy Rogers. At one time there was a Lake McDermott somewhere in Canada. The name was changed for some reason and I don't remember what the new name is. Not a place name but interesting; in the 1930's there was a Jack McDermott who was well known in the Hollywood set. An avid practical joker, he ones invited friends to a gala party. Most of the guests came in converibles with tops down. After it was dark, he turned on sprinklers which he had secretly mounted on his roof. Naturally the guests went into a frenzy thinking it was raining. At one time he modified a room so that the furniture was attached to the ceiling and the light fixtures were on the floor. When an unsuspecting guest passed out from too much liquor, he was carried to the room and allowed to wake up there. Who ever said the Irish have no sense of humor?

McDormans in United States and Canada

I am currently researching the McDorman surname in the United States and Nova Scotia. I have found that this name circa 1750 in the U.S., but can't get back any further than that. I've always heard that we were Scotch-Irish, but I'm uncertain as to whether my informants truly understood the term. I assume that my ancestors were Ulstermen, but have no definite proof. Anybody else out there researching this surname?

MacDermot Place names

Would anybody know the origins of the following town names in USA ?
McDermott, Ohio.
McDermitt, Nevada .
I am presuming that both were founded by men of the same name and therefore the MacDermot Clan Association would be interested in finding out who they were and where they came from. Rory MacDermot
