Letter from Lynne Murphy

I am descended from the Verdons of County Sligo. They held land from Taafe, Baron of Ballymote, in Cloonagashel ease of Ballymote, from the late 1600's until the 1760's. When Taafe lost his lands under the Penal Laws, the Verdons disappear from County Sligo. I believe the family relocated to Boyle in County Roscommon. But after searching in Sligo, Roscommon and the National Library I cannot bridge the gap between 1756 and 1800...the period when Catholic families left no trace in church or civil records. I have one clue and it involves the McDermots. John D. Verdon died in 1820 leaving a will. His parents were John Verdon and Miss McDermot of Boyle and he names John McDermot of Kilturra as his uncle. Other McDermots in the will are: Tim, Henry and Phillip, also of Kilturra. I realize women did not figure regularly in family histories but I am hoping somewhere there is mention of this Miss McDermot of Kilturra who married John Verdon of Boyle. It should be his parents who provide the link to the Cloonagashel Verdons.

Dear Mr MacDermot,

I live in the west of Scotland & am currently trying to trace my family tree.
I am descended from Tom McDermott who as born c.1880 in Coleraine in Northern Ireland. I would very much like to trace people who can trace themselves back to either Hugh or John (Tom's brothers) who would have been born in the same town at around the same time.
If you know anything that would help me or could put me in touch with someone who could I would be very grateful.

Neil McDermott

Dear Neil

Thanks for your enquiry about your Coleraine ancestors.
Most Irish McDermotts come from the Roscommon/Leitrim/Sligo area of Ireland. This is where the clan home lands are to be found and where MacDermot was once king. Another quite sizeable concentration is to be found in the Inishowen peninsula and Derry in the North. We are not sure what if any is the connection.
McDermotts also exist in Scotland as a separate clan, a sub sept of Clan Campbell. We do not beleive that there is a link here either.

Best regards
Rory MacDermot

McDermott from Mullingar

Searching for relatives of Patrick McDermott, son of Patrick McDermott (Dermody) and Anne McCormack (Cormac), born in Mullingar in County Westmeath, in about 1832. He appears to have had a number of siblings, at least some of whom also emigrated to the States. He married Bridid Deegan of Lisdowney, County Kilkenny. They had six children as they travelled Westward from Wilming- ton DE. James Deegan McDermott, Anna Catherine and Mary (Mamie) were all apparently born in Wilmington. Maggie was born in Euclid, OH. and Therese (Tessie) in Hamtramck, MI. Emma (Emily) was born in Warsaw. IL. Sometime after 1880, the family moved to  Chicago, IL. James Deegan McDermott married Anne Broughan of Euclid, OH and they too resided in Chicago with their 13 sons and one daughter.

Any information on other family connections in Mullingar would be most welcome.
Thanks.

Michael McDermott/Mary Kelly

My grandfather, John Joseph McDermott was born in NY City on 8 Oct 1894 to Michael McDermott and Mary Kelly. The family returned to Ireland at some point, where John remained until returning to NY in 1915.
I believe that Michael was from 40 Acres, Williamstown, Galway and Mary was from a nearby village named Crowhill. Mary died at 40 Acres on 17 Sept 1940. Michael may have had a sister Mary McDermott Connolly who also resided at 40 Acres.
I am looking forward to an e-mail from anyone who might also be researching this branch of the family.

Thank you.

Request for Info

Please excuse length of note. Am hoping some piece of it may prompt someone's memory and give me further clues to how we relate to main McEdermot family.

Thomas Richard-og McDermott

Children:

General:
Thomas Richard-og was cattle & horse buyer for Lady Lilly Dickey who lived in or near the gatehouse of the main Loch Ce/ estate and traveled for her, often in Scotland.
Large family group of 20 or more emigrated arriving Castle Garden, NYC, supposedly JUN 1890. Group included Thomas Richard-og's sister Blanche McD. Alfred and her husband James Alfred and some McPartlands (names unk). There is suggestion Maxwells and Greenes also accompanied them. First to Farmington, CT to Maxwell relatives, then New Britain, CT. Thomas Richard-og was son of John McDermott and Maria Maxwell. Maria apparently from "Woodbrook" estate of Sir Kirkwood on the Boyle Road between Boyle and Carrick-on-Shannon near Ardcarne. In 1970, a cousin - exact relationship undefined, but appears to be a 1st cousin once removed of Thomas Richard-og - Christina McD Daly of Boyle, confirmed that both families lived on the estate. Family also associated with townlands of Cloonybrien and Farnagallagh. Thomas Richard-og was 33rd degree Mason, apparently in Ireland.

Michael McDermott, b.c.1850-60 and Mary Belluw, Co. Armagh

Greetings from Chicago, USA to my fellow clansmen and clanswomen.

I have recently discovered a wealth of published material at Chicago's DePaul University, some in Irish; among these are an 1896 edition Annals of the Four Masters with annotations by Philip MacDermot, Mary F. Cusack's, An Illustrated History of Ireland, c. 1868 and the more recent work by John CaHill, How the Irish Saved Civilization. These discoveries provided the inspiration for an internet search in early September 1996 which resulted in my discovery of the MacDermot Clan Association. It is a thrill to find these historic references to people to whom I may very likely be related.

I am interested in applying the advice inscribed at the Greek Temple at Delphi, "Know thyself," through an investigation of my genetic past. Toward that end I hope to connect the family branch to which I belong to its possible source in 18th and 19th century Sligo and Roscommon, and through the more remote connections or probable connections which are known, back to the pre-Norman Period.

I am also seeking contact with individuals who may possibly have met my father, James (1923-1995). He may have been briefly stationed in England and Ireland prior to reporting to his assignment as a fighter pilot in Germany. His serial number was "0-826-472" and he was assigned to the AUS component of the aircorp, 43rd EAD. Central Europe is indicated under Battles and Campaigns. His Report of Separation indicates that he arrived in Europe (ETO) as a Second Lieutenant on the ides of March 1945 and departed for the States on the 21st of June 1946. He occasionally spoke of an encounter with Patton's forces during which some weary or near-sighted anti-aircraft gunner apparently mistook his P-51 group for the enemy. His monthly Individual Flight Records list Erding, Germany as his station for the period between Nov. 1945 and June 1946. Perhaps for reasons of secrecy, prior to that, during the period between March 1945 and November 1945, his station is simply designated, "F-157," and he is listed as attached to the ETO 353rd Fighter Group. One Extract of Individual Mission Chart is extant and seems to reveal a flurry of sorties during the week prior to Germany's surrender on May 7. He also mentioned that he was present as an observer at the Nuremburg trials. My hope is to discover some more personal account of a bit of his time there. . "DE MORTE TRANSIRE AD VITAM." Although I am fortunate in that I enjoy the benefit of relatives who have traced segments of my maternal lineage to the early 1700s in Wexford and Kerry, I have only just recently begun making genealogical inquiries of relatives on the McDermott side of the family. Since my father has passed away and his only surviving sister has somewhat limited genealogical knowledge, I must now rely on the genealogical research performed by more remote relatives and on my own records searches.

In order to avoid the duplication of the research of others before embarking on my own project, I hope to find relatives, near or remote, with 18th, 19th or 20th century connections to the following branch of the McDermott family. The children of Michael and Mary settled in the vicinity of Benton Harbor, Michigan, USA and in the vicinity of Chicago, Illinois, USA in the early part of this century. I suspect that many grandchildren and great-grandchildren remain in these areas.

The Descendants and Antecedents of Michael McDermott
LaSalle Co., Illinois (b.c 1855-65)
and Mary Belluw
Co. Armagh, Ireland (b.c. 1860-70)

I am told that some descendants of Mary's relatives may now reside in Liverpool near St. Helens, that Mary's siblings were John, Margaret (? Maloney), Maggie (? Anderson), and James, and that the Nugent Family may have a connection somewhere.

Please feel free to send E-mail with regard to any knowledge of the antecedents or descendants of the McDermott-Belluw Family. Other general interests include environmental geoscience, astronomy, and philosophy. I have received one response and look forward to additional email: mcdermo101@aol.com

I hope to visit Ireland in 1999 to meet the "mild people of hospitality and valour...the inheritance of the MacDermots" spoken of in the Annal of the Four Masters.

Looking for McDermotts from Northeast Pennsylvania

I am looking for other people who have McDermott relatives who lived in Northeast Pa. in the second half of the 1800's. My great great grandfather, John McDermott lived in Dunmore, Pa. in the 1870's (I am pretty sure his father's name was Owen McDermott). He was married to Bridget Gallagher Lavin. Sometime before 1885 they moved to Scranton, Pa. They had seven children, their names and dates of birth follow: Mary-born Feb. 1871 (married Myles McNiff); Patrick McDermott, my great grandfather-born June 1873 (married Margaret Cook); Owen McDermott-born March 1874 (never married); Katherine McDermott-1875;John McDermott-born about 1879 (wife's name was Beatric); James B. McDermott-born about 1880 (moved to Wyoming County, Pa.); Belinda F. McDermott- born 1880's- (never married). What I am in need of is information of anyone who might know of relatives with the same McDermott surname who settled in, or came from, these sections of Pennsylvania. I would really appreciate hearing from anyone who thinks they might have a common ancestor. I have very thorough information on the lives of the people that are mentioned above. I would be glad to share it with anyone who might need it. Just leave me a reply. I will respond to it as soon as I can.

Thanks for you time.

Canadian Census officials are sloppy !!!

It being about 0 Fahrenheit around here, I have been pursuing inside activities. One of them has been searching for my Lyons ancestors and how they got here from Ireland, and the other pursuing McDermotts. Someone thoughtfully put togeth-er all of the census information for Central and Western Canada, from 1600-1900. I find Andrew MacDermot's name immediately changed to McDermot, and then later to McDermott. His wife Sarah McNab may or may not have been Metis, as there are listings that designate her that. There are many McDermot and McDermott children born at Red River Settlement who were designated as Metis, including a Miles in 1839. However, there was also a custom of naming your children the same name as your boss. McDermot Andrew (European) born in 1793 in Ireland would seem to be the son of Myles, Prince of Coolavin. The next entry for him is Andrew McDermot living in 1881. Another Andrew was living in 1901. In the next list, Andrew McDermott, born circa 1790 is probably him as well.
My next pursuit is going to be a birth certificate for my great-grandfather Arthur McDermott 1875-1942 to see if I can  get any info on his father Andrew and where he was from.

Cheers to all McDermotts and MacDermots. It is fun to do this kind of work, and I am a bit obsessed at the moment.

Also planning a trip to Ireland !
