All MacDermots trace their origins back to Mulrooney, King of Moylurg, who died in 956AD. The sons and daughters of his great great great Grandson Dermot, also king of Moylurg, were the first named MacDermots, the children of Dermot. Over the centuries our name has been spelt in many ways: MacDiarmada, MacDermot, McDermott, MacDormand, McDermond, Darmody, Dermody, Dermott, Kermode to mention but a few of the more common. Mulrooney is not a variation but is an older name with the same origins. MacDermot Roe and McDermottroe also descend from the original Dermot. Membership of MacDermot Clan Association is open to all descendents of Mulrooney Mor, whatever the spelling!
The Purposes of the Clan Association are to develop links between McDermotts around the world and to foster communication between them encouraging the exchange of knowledge and the participation in the affairs of our great and widely spread family.
The Activities of the Clan Association are funded exclusively by members subscriptions, by sales of macdermot merchandise through macdermot.com and with the help of the occasional generous donation. Funds received are used exclusively for the development and upkeep of macdermot.com, for production and purchase of McDermott merchandise and for the everyday running of the Association. Funds are also channeled to assist in the preparatory work for gatherings and reunions both at home and in North America. It is hoped that a MacDermot Fund will eventually be established in order to be able to contribute to the efforts of McDermotts who may be in need of assistance in their genealogical endeavours. It is also our intention to create a central MacDermot Archive or Library at Coolavin which would be acccessible to all McDermotts as a serious place of research. Bar the fee paid to our professional webmaster, Mr. P Roche, no remunerations or stipends are taken from Clan Association revenue by any member of the Clan.
Members of MacDermot Clan Association receive a certificate of membership personally signed by The MacDermot and access to MacDermot Journal Online free of charge. Members may also avail of 10% discount on all products at the MacDermot Shop and at special events, such as the Clan Gathering. Members will have greater ease of communication with each other through access to the Directory of Members.
